An Introduction to Art Therapy
For centuries creative expression has been used to help people manage their lives and express themselves openly. More recently this has developed formally into the therapeutic field of Art Therapy, which is rapidly expanding in Australia.
IKON is the largest provider of nationally accredited Art Therapy courses in Australia.
While valuable for all people Art therapy is commonly applied in specific contexts such as in aged care settings; dealing with trauma and stress; working with children and young people and with culturally and linguistically diverse clients.
This workshop provides an introduction to Art Therapy including:
- What Art Therapy is;
- How it can be used,
- And provide an opportunity to experience art therapy for yourself.
This workshop is a great opportunity for:
- Individuals who are interested in becoming art therapists
- Artists of various modalities that want to explore the therapeutic side of art
- Counsellors and other professionals wanting professional development.
Art therapy is about understanding, not appreciation, so being ‘good at art' is not important.

Arts in Palliative Care
Art making has the capacity to be a positive life affirming process for people for whom living may have become an act of waiting for death, a time of inactivity, pain, fear and anxiety.
It is active, rather than passive and creates tangible artefacts that remain for families and future
generations.
In this workshop we will look at how just as the symbol is infused with profound meaning and power, so the process of creating the symbol is one that is equally powerful. This workshop will explore how an opportunity to create art and tell a story, can provide an opportunity for resolution and acceptance, and a chance for people to leave behind something meaningful and tangible.
